Weddings abroad – Limassol
Limassol is an attractive resort in Cyprus, popular with couples planning their weddings abroad. Overlooking the beautiful Akrotiri Bay, it comprises a modern beach resort and a scenic old town. Equally suitable for a church or beach wedding, Limassol is also one of Cyprus’s leading honeymoon locations.
We at The Co-operative Travel recommend Limassol to all those considering wedding packages abroad.
Alternatives to beach weddings
Beach weddings in Cyprus are easy to arrange. If you want the ceremony on the sand, see if the venue has a private beach. Alternatively, pick a hotel with an attractive garden, overlooking the picturesque bay. A garden wedding can be very romantic, especially in springtime.
Some hotels have private chapels – the perfect alternative to a traditional church venue. However, many couples booking wedding packages abroad choose Limassol because of the flexibility of not having to remain in one place. They can have the ceremony at an attractive old civic or religious venue, and then return to the hotel for the reception and evening party. This means they get to ride in style in a limo or horse and carriage - just like at home.
Civil weddings are held in several locations. The Limassol Cultural Centre is a popular venue; a traditionally-built stone building with beautiful landscaped gardens. Agios Athanasios Town Hall is another attractive site. Once the local school, this charming, classically designed building has been tastefully renovated.
Limassol benefits from year-round Mediterranean sunshine, and so some couples prefer the coolness of a church for their vows. The town has several attractive churches, open to non-Cypriot brides. They include the simple, attractive old stone chapel of St. Barnabas, and the picturesque St. Catherines – a traditional Catholic Church with bells, arches and statues.
Planning your wedding abroad
Hotels offering wedding packages organise the legal side of things, which includes making an application for a special licence. This brings the minimum residency stay down from 15 to 3 days. Upon their arrival, couples opting for a civil wedding need to apply in person to the marriage officer of Limassol town hall, to have their relevant documents checked. Couples planning a religious ceremony will also need baptism certificates.
Unlike many weddings abroad, Limassol keeps things simple and familiar whatever the venue. Whether you want a Byzantine chapel, or an intimate beach wedding, we at The Co-operative Travel recommend Limassol for your wedding packages abroad.
