Skiing holidays at Zermatt

When people ask about ski holidays to Zermatt, it can be summed up in two words: The Matterhorn. Ski breaks in Zermatt take you straight to the highest and most majestic peaks in the Alps.

At The Co-operative Travel we offer skiing breaks to Zermatt throughout the season. However, Zermatt has a lot more than just ski runs to offer.

Staying in Zermatt

Zermatt is the perfect location for a winter holiday. A mediaeval, scenic village which is totally car free, it offers the best skiing in the Alps, as well as a whole range of other winter sports and excursions.

People booking skiing holidays to Zermatt are going to one of the top ski destinations in Europe. The tiny village has only 5,500 permanent residents, yet over 250 hotels, restaurants and night clubs. Despite this, it retains a small-village feel, with accommodation in charming, traditional bouquet hotels clustered round the village centre.

Getting to Zermatt

All Zermatt’s mountains are over 10,000 feet tall, meaning ski breaks to Zermatt can be booked all year round. However, this also means it’s very remote, with no roads.

The best way to get to Zermatt is by air to Geneva, and then high speed train. It is possible to drive most of the way, and then take a cog-train the last few miles.

Skiing in Zermatt

Although a wide range of winter sports is on offer, the main reason people take skiing breaks in Zermatt is because of the mountains. Zermatt is surrounded by 28 of the highest peaks in the Alps, with the spectacular Matterhorn towering 13,000 feet above sea level.

Not surprisingly, Zermatt has more skiable terrain than almost anywhere in Europe. 90% of it is above the tree line, and most ski holidays to Zermatt are booked by intermediate to expert skiers.

The three main skiing areas are the Sunnegga, Gornergrat, and Matterhorn. Gornergrat has the easiest runs, with 15 trails designated as being suitable for beginners. Due to its altitude, Zermatt operates trams and gondolas rather than conventional ski lifts.

Snowboarding facilities

Snowboarders are also attracted by skiing breaks to Zermatt, and have their own park on the Matterhorn. Other winter sports include sleigh-riding, ice skating and tobogganing.

The ski breaks in Zermatt that we offer At The Co-operative Travel are not ideal for young families. However, for adults they offer a once in a chance lifetime to ski across the finest mountain scenery in the world.
