Where to stay in Courmayeur
Accommodation is in small family run hotels, rather than large modern complexes. However, many of them have facilities like spas and fitness rooms to keep skiers happy.
When booking ski breaks in Courmayeur, people head for three main areas.
The lively town centre is a popular base, with numerous gift shops and restaurants. Dolonne is a hamlet about 15 minutes walk from the town centre, close to the ski lifts and “Baby Bowl” area for beginners. It offers accommodation in traditional old farmhouses and cottages, and is popular with families.
Entrèves is a small cluster of houses, hotels and restaurants, close to the slopes of Mont Blanc and popular with seasoned skiers. A cable car connects to the town, 3 km away.
Getting to Courmayeur
As with most Alpine destinations, ski holidays to Courmayeur involve a lengthy transfer from the airport – in this case, Geneva or Turin.
However, the breathtaking scenery and peaks are what ski breaks to Courmayeur are all about, so just lean back and enjoy.
Skiing in Courmayeur
Courmayeur’s main skiing areas are located across a river valley. The Checrouit side, overlooking the town, offers gentle slopes for intermediate skiers. The Val Veny side faces Mont Blanc and is more challenging.
Apart from the “Baby Bowl” area there is limited skiing for beginners, as there are few blue runs. However there are plenty of “mild” red runs, with off-piste areas for more advanced skiers. For improvers, the Gabba lift offers a wooded area for first time off-piste skiing, with a fairly steep red run further down.
The Italian side of Mont Blanc offers an unforgettable experience, as advanced skiers can book guides to take them down the Toula Glacier route, or the 24 km Vallée Blanche into Chamonix in France.
