Skiing breaks in Alpe d’Huez

For ski holidays in the Grande Rousses Massif, Alpe d’Huez is a huge resort situated at an altitude of 1869 meters.  There are four main sectors to the resort and there is a busy atmosphere amidst a thriving community of 1700 residents.  The popular ‘quartiers’ for ski breaks are Quartier des Bergers, Quartier des Jeux and Quartier des Vieil Alpe.

The latter is the oldest of the sectors and is reasonably residential and sedate.  However it is the most picturesque part of the resort with old style buildings and charming back streets.  A wander around the streets is a treat and you’ll also find some pretty family run restaurants.  Quartier Jeux is the main area where all the bars, restaurants and shops can be found.  For a modern slice of town head to Quartier Bergers which also has several little shops and places to eat and drink.

Idyllic Alpe d’Huez

Originally Huez was the main village for ski breaks at the resort.  Set at 1450 metres above sea level it looks over the Sarenne Gorge.  Skiing holidays here are scenic and this idyllic mountain village is made up of a labyrinth of side streets.  At the heart of it stands the St Anne Roman church and you’ll also find a number of shops, a bookstore, some bars and even a cyber café.  You can get to Alpe d’Huez by cable car within 5 minutes.

Skiing breaks here cater to the backcountry and freeride experts but Alpe d’Huez is not just for the advanced skier.  There is something for all ages and all levels of ability.  The region is like a massive natural fun park and it will meet with all tastes.

Slopes for thrill seekers and beginners

Alpe d’Huez boasts the longest ski run in Europe called La Sarenne which is a whopping 16km long.  It is also home to the world famous ‘Tunnel’ run which is suitable for the experienced thrill seekers of your ski break group.  For beginners and young children there are gentle slopes that can be found on the outskirts of this resort.  Here little ones can build up confidence and skiing technique in safety.  From intermediate upwards there are a wide variety of red and blue runs to keep you entertained throughout your ski holidays.

The resort is situated in what looks like a big sunny bowl which has earned it the name ‘The Sunny Island’ along with the large amount of sunshine this resort is blessed with annually.

At The Co-operative Travel we can advise you on the skiing holidays within this region throughout the ski season of early December to the end of April.
