For great powder snow, and excellent conditions which favour novice skiers, choose a Fernie ski holiday with The Co-operative Travel.
A settlement was first established here by gold prospectors more than 100 years ago, but the area’s prosperity was founded on coal and it was named after the man whose initial discovery helped establish the new industry.
Sited in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Fernie is a relatively uncrowded resort, three-and-a-half hours travelling time from Calgary Airport. It is an ideal winter resort for family holidays and suits less experienced skiers, which welcomes beginners of all ages, with the well-known ‘cruiser’ ski trail allowing skiers of all abilities to take in some fabulous views.
For more experienced skiers, there are wide areas of ‘steep and deep’ terrain waiting to be explored. With a grand total of around 130 miles of piste on offer, there’s plenty of room for other winter activities, including snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and even, for the adventurous, torchlight descents of some of the steeper terrain.
Winter sports enthusiasts visiting Fernie are catered for by a purpose-built resort, built in classic Alpine style and offering a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants. The original mining settlement is three miles away, and connected to the newer resort by a regular bus service.
Most of the accommodation for a Fernie winter holiday is in the older part of the town, and this caters for visitors on a wide range of budgets.
The après ski of Fernie is concentrated at the foot of the main slopes, and highlights include The Pub, The Grand Central and Griz Bar.
Wildlife spotting trips are also popular from Fernie, and experienced guides will lead you to well hidden spots where you can expect to see deer, moose, elk, rocky mountain bighorn sheep and possibly even the occasional wolf, coyote. lynx or bobcat. You could also learn to mush your own sled with an introduction to the basics of handling a team of dogs.
Off-piste activities include indoor and heated outdoor swimming pools, an ice rink, cinema, bowling, and gym.
