Located in the eastern half of the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria is a stunning nation with bitterly cold winters providing excellent snow for the major ski resorts from mid December to mid April.
The ski resort of Borovets is located just 73kms from the capital, Sofia. Borovets is the largest and oldest of Bulgaria’s ski resorts and sits beneath the highest peak in the country, Moussala. The town of Borovets is idyllic offering great shopping, restaurants and accommodation. A skiing holiday here takes place in three areas, Borovets, Yastrebets and Markujika. The pistes cover 40kms and also have the facilities for night skiing. There are eleven lifts in total and cross country skiers will find an excellent 15kms trail along with a world-class biathlon track.

Pamporovo ski resort is located 85kms from Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second largest city. Situated in the Rhodopes Mountains, Pamporovo is the Europe’s most southern ski resort. At a height of 1,650m, the ski resort of Pamporovo has excellent snow cover throughout the season. The resort is purpose built set below the peak of Snejanka and boasts a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The pistes here cover 25kms and off piste skiing is also available.
For the beginner, Pamporovo has nursery slopes and a great ski school with tuition in English. To keep waiting times to a minimum, there are 6 chairlifts and 13 draglifts. There are 9 restaurants on the slopes and those looking for something a little more scenic you can eat at the restaurant on Snejanka Peak, which is accessible by chairlift. The après ski at Pamporovo is lively with many pubs, bars and discos.
The ski resort of Bansko is becoming increasingly popular with excellent skiing conditions and value for money. It is most suited to beginners and intermediate skiers. The ski pistes are located in two main areas; Chalin Valog which is at an elevation of between 1,100 and 1,600 metres, and Shiligarnika which sits between 1,700 and 2,500 metres. Both are located on the northern slopes of the Pirin Mountain and are about 10kms above the town of Bansko.
There is a 25 minute gondola ride starting in Bansko town providing a stunning view of the mountains and valleys. The pistes cover 65kms and there is plenty of off piste skiing for the more adventurous skier or snowboarder. The ski season lasts longer here with guaranteed snow cover from at least mid December to May. There are over 40 snow cannons making the ski season last longer. There is a fun peak nearby for snowboarders who wish to try jumps, half pipes and more for all levels of ability. Slalom and giant slalom runs are available and plenty of cross country tracks.
