Ski holidays at the pretty mediaeval Austrian village of Seefeld offer fun both on and off the slopes. Having been a venue for the Winter Olympics, there are facilities for every level of skier, from black run to the very young. We at The Co-operative Travel have ski breaks in Seefeld to suit every budget.
Just 11 miles (17 km) from Innsbruck, with fast road and rail connections, Seefeld is an archetypal Christmas card Tyrolean village. A walkers’ paradise in the summer months, it offers an eclectic range of off-piste activities and entertainments, making it the perfect resort for family ski holidays.
An Olympic ski village and year-round resort, there’s no reason why non-skiers can’t enjoy ski holidays at Seefeld – the ultimate off-slope winter resort. Seefeld offers something for the entire family, from toddler to grandparent, whether they can zing down the slopes like James Bond or not ski at all.
From cross-country snow shoe hikes to horse-drawn sleigh rides, there are plenty of ways to explore the stunning landscape of the Tyrol without strapping skis on. In the village, the fun is even more intense, with ice-skating, swimming pools and tennis courts. There are even two all-weather golf courses! The lively pedestrianised village centre has a wide selection of bars, restaurants and shops, with a vibrant live entertainment and sports event program.
Skiing breaks at Seefeld are perfect for newcomers, with a centralised ski school offering tuition to all levels, from budding Olympic athlete to tiny tot. One thing the resort doesn’t have is thousands of square kilometres of barren terrain. What it does have are 36 excellent downhill runs (14 beginner, 12 intermediate and 10 advanced), with adrenalin-packed night-time ski jaunts and black runs for the more advanced. 30 ski lifts – including six chairs and three gondolas – and some of the best Nordic and cross-country skiing in Europe add to the fun.
At Geigenbühel, nervous and younger skiers can learn the rudiments of downhill skiing, while snowboarders and Alpine enthusiasts can take to the faster runs at Rosshütte and Gschwandtkopf. Afterwards, they can enjoy some warming Tyrolean fare at the traditional ski-huts.
With its mediaeval churches and traditional Tyrolean charm (a visit to the Little Church on the Lake is a must) skiing holidays at Seefeld offer endless opportunities for memorable photographs.
Ski breaks are particularly popular at Christmas, when there are some exciting night ski races and rousing après ski carol concerts – as well as plenty of warming Gluhwein and gingerbread. We at The Co-operative Travel recommend Seefeld ski holidays, whatever your age or ability.
