This is Austria's only purpose-built resort where you can ski to and from the door of most of its modern, chalet-style hotels before sampling the lively après ski in the resort centre. Originally just a mountain pass, Obertauern is high and sits on the edge of the tree-line. Shrouded by the peaks of the Radstädter Tauern and with its excellent snow record, variety of terrain and good childcare facilities, this is an ideal choice for families and all grades of skier from late November through until May.
There are 120kms of manicured pistes suitable for beginners, and the 'green' circuit has wonderful open slopes to give the beginner and second-time skier confidence. There are very good nursery slopes and the Schaidberg chair leads to a high-altitude beginners' slope with an easy run back home.
The 'pink' circuit has a vast amount of blue and red runs and most of the trail is of intermediate level. You have the choice of staying low for easier pistes, or trying the tougher runs higher up.
There are off-piste opportunities plus challenging black runs, such as Gamsleiten and the race course under the Schaidbergbahn, which will satisfy the most demanding skier. With the picturesque slopes and the exciting runs, Obertauern is a skier's heaven.
The facilities are perfect for keen snowboarders, you can choose whether to explore the scenic slopes or head over to the Fun Park on the Kehrkpof which offers kickers and rails for all abilities. Drag-lifts are optional except for beginners, and Blue Tomato is a specialist school.
