Sri Lanka is one of the most exotic honeymoon locations in the world. A paradise island of tropical beaches; exotic wildlife; ancient temples and colonial monuments, it has honeymoon packages to suit every budget. We at The Co-operative Travel invite you to take tea with us in the island previously known as Ceylon.
Once seen, Sri Lanka is never forgotten. Fabulous tropical beaches of soft, powdery sand shelve into turquoise waters rich with marine life. Inland, the beaches give way to lush, tropical hillsides, tea plantations, rice paddies and jungles rich with exotic flora and fauna. The island abounds in cultural relics, from Buddhist mountain temples to the colonial history of Colombo, the capital.
Not surprisingly, Sri Lanka is a popular choice for wedding packages abroad. Sitting on a palm-fringed beach at sunset, watching the fishermen tending their nets, is a wonderful end to a perfect day.
Most honeymoons are booked at beach resorts between lively Colombo and the old colonial settlement of Galle – both of which are attractive honeymoon destinations.
Beruwela is a popular resort for beach weddings, with intimate beaches and a range of sophisticated boutique hotels and bungalow resorts. Bars and evening entertainment are mainly arranged by the hotels, keeping it low-key. On the beaches are bars and traditional seafood cafes, while the town has numerous craft stalls. If you get tired of the beach there are sailing, diving and excursions to enjoy.
Bentota is in a stunning location at the mouth of the Bentota River. As well as fabulous beaches, you can enjoy a number of excursions into the interior. Elephant trekking; crocodile-watching, river boat trips; temple excursions and shopping trips to Colomboare just some of the activities laid on for newlyweds. You will use up hours of battery power and memory space here – so make sure your cameras have plenty of both.
Sri Lanka has a year-round tropical climate, with honeymoon locations concentrated on the dry and breezy coast. The interior can be very humid, though the central highlands are pleasant, with cooler temperatures and low humidity throughout the year.
The hot dry months of June and July attract heavy winds. This can make it dangerous for swimming – though great for surfing. October to January are the wettest months, but there is no monsoon season as such, and if you don’t mind the higher humidity this can be an excellent time to pick up a cheap honeymoon package.
We at The Co-operative Travel recommend honeymoon packages to Sri Lanka for all those who want to start married life with an unforgettable tropical adventure.
