Boston Holidays

GENERAL

Soak up a wealth of American history

One of the first cities settled by the pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower, Bostonians immediately set about cementing their place in American civilisation and making their riches by whatever ways they could.

There are still signs everywhere of this 'old money', but these are tempered by the existence of a number of more trendy neighbourhoods which boast a fine array of upmarket shops and boutiques.

As one of the most patriotic places in all of the 53 states, Boston boasts a wealth of fine museums and galleries reflecting this love of the American dream and all its manifestations. Don't miss the chance to visit the Boston Public Garden, the oldest of its type in the country.

The city, the seat of the American revolution, was ravaged by the depression of the 1930s, but today's modern skyline is evidence of a recovery which has been sustained since the 1950s, and shows that a rebellious spirit still lives on.

A package holiday or all-inclusive holiday gives you the chance to soak up a wealth of American history, and the best way to encapsulate it is to undertake the Harbor Walk. Then head across the Charles River to take in the impressive Harvard College buildings with their pretty squares.

Explore the range of activities in Boston

There's a whole world of tastes to work your way through on your Boston holiday. Italian cuisine dominates in the North End, while Chinatown, as it suggests, offers tempting tasters of Eastern specialities.

If you know of no other Boston bars, the Bull and Finch pub should be instantly familiar - in another guise at least, because this was the setting for the long-running TV show Cheers. Otherwise, you can enjoy the laid-back bars and clubs popular with Cambridge's student population, or splash out in the glitzy clubs of the city's elegant Theater District. You could then round off your evening in the trendy Leather District, home to late-night clubs, cocktail bars and modern pool halls.

If you're a baseball fan then you'll want to head down to Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox and the oldest Major League Baseball stadium currently in use. After you've tried your hand at pitching the ball then make your way to nearby Lansdowne Street where you'll find a variety sports themed bars, nightclubs and restaurants to relax in.

Must-do day trips on your Boston holiday include pretty and historic Salem for a day of whale-watching. Cape Cod is the place to head for your fix of active sports, such as cycling or canoeing, and afterwards you can reward yourself in one of the local beachside seafood restaurants.

If you've got any energy left then head for Newbury Street where shopaholics will be in their element among salons, small boutiques and chic bars and eateries. You'll find everything you dreamed of from the latest design by Chanel to magnificent bohemian creations.
