And when you’re ready to venture out of the city, journey north for one hour and you’ll find yourself amongst hillsides of vines in where there are plenty of vineyard owners happy to let you sample some of the local produce. If a holiday on the beach is more you’re speed then how about a trip to Larnaca on Cyprus’ east coast and dip your toes in the Mediterranean at the beautiful Phinikoudes Beach, famed for its palm trees. Go for a romantic walk along the coast’s rocky outcrops or get out the snorkels for an unforgettable experience under the water.
The beach has a range of facilities from showers and also has a lifeguard on duty. When you’re happy with your tan, take a short walk into the city to try out some of the many bars and restaurants.
The mountainous area has many small villages to explore, such as Lefkara with its narrow streets and stone houses. Anyone with an interest in archaeology should head straight for Choirokoitia, a Neolithic settlement which has now been classed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
West of Cyprus, is the northernmost county in Africa, Tunisia, where sun worshippers will feel right at home. Towns like Hammamet are particularly popular with visitors as they offer easy access to sandy beaches which are perfect for unwinding, swimming and a variety of water sports such as sailing and windsurfing.
Sunkissed beaches are plentiful, while those looking for a little more action can find it easily. The streets of Tunis, the capital city, are usually flooded with market traders and the air is thick with the scent of spices. Tunisia is a varied country with much to offer travellers and is well worth further investigation.
