Things to do in Porto Santo

You will find the island mercifully free of party resorts and banging nightclubs. However, there’s still plenty to do. For golf-lovers, the island has two superb 18 and 9-hole golf courses, endorsed by none other than Severiano Ballesteros himself. 

The island has a dramatic mountain backdrop formed from two extinct volcanoes, one at each end. These “horns” are perfect for hiking, but if you prefer to take the easier approach the island is lush and varied. Farms, forests and meadows are matched by craggy cliffs and dramatic rock formations, while for nature-lovers there are wild flowers, butterflies, birds and dolphins in abundance.

Porto Santo’s main claim to fame though, is in its beaches, which are reportedly the best in Madeira. The 9 km stretch is perfect for evening strolls or relaxation, and the sands are said to have healing properties, curing everything from rheumatism to broken bones!
