When to book package holidays in Morocco

If you’re travelling with younger children, it’s best to book in the spring or autumn, when temperatures are bearable. Be aware that during the holy month of Ramadan there are restrictions on many opening times however, it can be a fascinating experience.

Cheap family holidays are popular at the coastal resorts, where the heat is more moderate than inland. Be aware that you should take some warm evening clothes with you whatever time of year you travel, as the desert climate means nights can feel cold.

Trips to Marrakesh

Morocco has a high number of family-friendly hotels. Many people choose to stay in self-contained complexes. While this means there are plenty of recreation facilities and things to do, there’s a lot to be said for staying at a traditional riad, where you are treated like one of the family. This is a brilliant way to introduce the children to foreign cultures. Most resorts include excursions to the ancient walled city of Marrakesh. Here, you can safely lose yourself in the winding alleyways and bazaars of the Medina, while buying exotic spices from huge wooden tubs. At night, visitors can enjoy the storytellers, snake-charmers and conjurers of Jemma el Fna, the ancient and atmospheric main square.

Marrakech is also the starting point for adventure trips. Teens can trek with a guide through the Atlas Mountains, or visit the ruined Kasbah of Telouet in the Sahara. At Benhaddou Kasbah is a World Heritage site that’s been used for a number of movies, including The Mummy. Essaouira, an old pirate hideaway, is another popular choice – as are camel rides across the desert.

Cheap family holidays on the coast

Between March and September, the trade winds of the Atlantic coast make it great for activities like board and windsurfing. Agadir is a popular choice for families, with a European flavour.

Tétouan, near Tangier on the Mediterranean coast, has a number of new complexes offering all inclusive holidays. Go souvenir haggling at the bazaars, then head to one of the quiet fishing villages for supper - or relax on the beach with an ice cream.
