Lakes and Mountains holidays

Try something a little different

Heading off for a city break or beach holiday can be a fantastic way to spend your well-earned time off. If you’re tempted to try something a little different however, why not find out what a trip to the lakes and mountains can offer? You certainly won’t be short of destinations to choose from.

Italy attracts holiday makers from across the world who return year after year for a package holiday or all-inclusive holiday. Lake Como in the Lombardy is one of the country’s top destinations and its spectacular views have attracted the likes of actor George Clooney, who owns one of the many colourful villas dotted along the lake. With Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore close by, there is plenty to keep visitors entertained including walking, swimming, waterskiing, fishing and sightseeing.

Head south to the top of the Italian Alps and you’ll again find yourself with a multitude of options no matter what time of year you visit. Find some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world during the winter months or spend a summer break relaxing and taking in the stunning views, walking in the mountains, climbing and mountain biking.

North of Italy is the town and resort of Zermatt in Switzerland. Famous for its winter sports and mountaineering, the town is overlooked by one of the highest peaks in the Alps, the Matterhorn. Those with a romantic disposition should head east, through Austria and into Slovenia, to Lake Bled, where a beautiful white church stands on an island in the middle of the lake. Relax in Bled’s tranquil surroundings, explore the many trails around the lake or enjoy a spot of hunting, fishing, and depending on the time of year, a trip to the nearby ski pistes.

Visitors to France are spoilt for choice when it comes to lakes and mountains holidays. Again, the time of year will depend on the type of activities on offer, but there will certainly be something to suit every taste, whether you opt for the slopes of Val d’Isere, or perhaps the resorts of La Plagne and neighbouring Les Arcs in the Tarentaise Valley.

A haven for skiers

Europe does not have a monopoly when it comes to rocky mountain ranges and sparkling azure waters. In Canada, the likes of Whistler in British Colombia and Banff, in neighbouring Alberta, effortlessly pull in visitors every year. A major destination for skiers in the winter months and mountaineers during the summer, Canada and the Rocky Mountains won’t disappoint.

Over the border into the United States there is again plenty of choice for those wanting to enjoy the splendour of lakes and mountains during their holiday. Jackson Hole is a popular winter destination for many as the area receives over 400 inches of snow annually. Another favourite is the Killington Resort which is spread over six mountains and offers 141 trails.

Skiing is also a major source of revenue for people living around Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountains, although when the snow melts, the area is a winner with mountain bikers and hikers.
