The largest resort on the island of Zakynthos, Laganas is very popular with visitors from the UK.
The accommodation and attractions of Laganas are scattered quite widely, with some apartments up to a mile from the beach. Laganas is Zakynthos most lively resort, with entertainment going on right through until dawn at many of the more than 100 bars spread out along the shoreline.
As a result, it can't be considered traditionally Greek in any sense, but more unspoilt villages further inland are easily accessible, lying between the flat area of the bay in which Laganas is situated, and the mountains which rise inland to the west.
The 5km long Laganas beach is one of the best on the island, consisting of gently sloping sand running down to meet a crystal-clear sea. Like nearby Kalamaki, there are, however, restrictions on water sports in the area due to it being part of the breeding grounds of the island's famous Caretta sea turtles.
In Laganas itself, holidaymakers will find a wide variety of food, from burgers to fine cuisine, as well as restaurants and tavernas offering traditional Greek fare.
A variety of hotels and self-catering apartments comprise the vast majority of the accommodation available, but there are some holiday homes among the larger houses surrounded by olive groves and orange trees a little way inland
Laganas has a range of typical tourist-orientated shops, as well as ones specialising in jewellery and leather goods.
It is also handy as a base for exploring nearby Zakynthos Town.
