Make the right choice of an Argassi holiday with the help of The Co-operative Travel.
Argassi, in the south east of the Greek island of Zante, is one of the most popular tourist resorts on this blissful island.
Set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Skopos, Argassi is within easy walking distance of Zante town, which has helped this resort to become so popular and accounts for its growing size. The walk to Zante town is very pleasant as it is all along a coastal road, providing stunning views of the shimmering azure water.
Argassi's beach stretches the entire length of the resort and although fairly narrow, it has areas of both sand and shingle and enough space to rarely feel crowded. Watersports are available here, while the resort itself is compact so all amenities, supermarkets, shops, bars, restaurants, clubs are close to hand.
The centre has a lively feel while the outskirts of the town are more suited to those who seek the comforts and attractions of an Argassi holiday but a chance to stay somewhere more tranquil.
The main road is lined with tavernas and restaurants, where a wide range of international cuisine has been added to the menu alongside traditional Greek dishes. Snacks, ice creams and refreshments are available all day long, while several fast food snack bars satisfy those on the move.
Argassi's best-known landmark is the Church of the Virgin Mary of Skopiotissas which was built in 1624 on the peak of Mount Skopos. The church was built in the shape of a cross on the site of a temple of Artemeis and is surrounded by the ruins of a once thriving monastery. It is said that when the weather is clear, this church can be seen throughout Zakynthos.
Inside the church are beautiful wall paintings of saints and a splendid icon of the Virgin Skopiotissa. The Iconostasis (a screen decorated with icons within Orthodox churches) is unusual as it is built from stone and not wood like all the other churches in Zakynthos.
