Since being deposed as the Menorcan capital by Mohan in 1722, Ciutadella has forged an identity of its own as the island’s religious centre. As a result the tourist industry here has developed at a slower pace than Mohan and has thankfully retained its medieval charm.

The two main beaches, Arenal de Son Saura and Cala Macarella and Macarelleta, are both beautiful sites, offering sheltered bays and coves with fine sand, perfect for family fun and games, or just lying back and soaking up the rays.

As with much of Spain, Menorca hosts many different types of market, including the permanent Mercados and the more ad hoc street markets which often move between locations. But it’s worth checking them out to find good food, arts and crafts – and those all-important souvenirs – at prices lower than in most shops.

Ciutadella has an incredible selection of restaurants where every type of cuisine is available, while the nightlife is centred on the marina, with bars playing an eclectic mix of jazz, blues and modern music to be found both here and in the town centre.
