One of the world's foremost tourist destinations
Steadily transforming itself into one of the world's foremost tourist destinations, Bangkok is a packed, buzzing city whose style and mystery can be readily experienced on a holiday with The Co-operative Travel.
Old and new live here in close proximity. The ancient city is considered the largest open-air museum in the world with more than 100 monuments, and the famed temples are dotted liberally around the city. The most visited are the Wat Phra Kaew, home of the Emerald Buddha and reputed site of many miracles, and the Grand Palace, once a royal residence, and offering an outstanding blend of Thai and Italian architecture.
The modern city is the archetypal 21st century capital, and the space-age feel of the many skyscrapers and lofty buildings is reinforced by the modern monorail whose two lines snake their way through the central area and offer the best method of escaping from the traffic-clogged streets below and accessing many of the liveliest areas.
The best shopping in the city requires you to take a much more traditional form of transport, however. The Damnoen Saduak floating market features stalls selling farm produce and village crafts. For those who prefer to keep their feet on terra firma, the Chatuchak Weekend Market is a must-visit for a fascinating choice of goods, ranging from CDs to live reptiles! As befits Thailand's reputation as one of the leading producers of imitation goods, you'll also encounter a huge amount of 'designer' clothes, watches and bags.
Choose from Bangkok accommodation to meet any budget
Eating out on Bangkok holidays will be mostly a very informal affair. Don't miss the chance to sample the fare from one of the street stalls or cafes - being sure to check that it has been properly cooked first - for good value food on the go. If you're going more formal, there is still a large number of options, and if you fancy a change from the native dishes, some international flavours are now finding their way onto menus.
You'll have a big choice of places to stay, whether you're looking for a package holiday or all-inclusive holiday. There are options covering all grades of accommodation, and all budgets, so there's bound to be something on offer which is ideal for you.
Bangkok's nightlife continues to thrive despite attempts to impose curfews. The louder, more party aspects of its culture are well-known but for a more intimate, romantic night you shouldn't miss The Bamboo Bar, where laid-back jazz music plays well into the night, and Cheap Charlies and The Barbican Bar are good for enjoying a few cocktails. For a night out with a twist, however, the Joe Louise Puppet Theatre is a novel, and popular, choice.
There's plenty of culture and tradition to be enjoyed on a Bangkok holiday with The Co-operative Travel. Visit us to see what we have available for your chosen dates or, if you're looking for a last-minute holiday to Bangkok, you might grab yourself a real bargain!
