India may not be the first destination that comes to mind when planning your next holiday. However a holiday to Kerala, located on the south-western tip of India, will leave you pleasantly surprised. It's considered to be one of the cleanest, most peaceful and pristine states of India. It has the country's highest life expectancy rate and a world class health system.
Kerala translates as 'land of the coconuts' and the state boasts some spectacular scenery. You'll find sweeping rivers intersecting the palm-filled countryside, an abundance of beautiful forests and fascinating tea, coffee and spice plantations. However the region is best known for its wildlife and where else can you come within a few feet of wild animals such as elephants, monkeys and tigers in their natural habitat.
Holidays to Kerala
A day trip on the Kerala backwaters and lakes in an old rice boat is a recommended activity while on your holiday in Kerala. Or you may want to take in the capital which is Trivandrum, where tourists head for the Chalai Bazzar, one long street selling an array of products such as sandalwood carvings, paintings, jewellery and antiques. The ancient city of Kochi is another must-see as it houses India's oldest church.
Kovalam beach is the most popular destination among holiday makers as it has a fabulous beach and offers a good choice of both luxury and budget accommodation. Kovalam means 'grove of coconut trees' and this world-class beach is just as the name suggests. Warm blue waters of the Arabian Sea lap beautiful white sands, making this a dream honeymoon destination.
Varkala is another popular destination for tourists, with its breathtakingly beautiful beach which is safe for swimming, and a variety of many seafood restaurants. One of the highlights of your holiday in Kerala has to be the food. You'll be spoilt for choice with the wonderful variety of Continental, Chinese and Indian dishes. Many of the local dishes are cooked in coconut milk and it is fabulous for fresh seafood and vegetarian food.
November to April is generally considered the best time to visit this captivating state as its fairly dry and cool. By May and June it can reach over 100F. June to September is Monsoon season, but unlike some countries, during the Monsoons it does not rain continuously, but tends to rain for a few hours with sunny interludes.
