Despite being just a short distance from all the region’s favourite holiday destinations, such as Benidorm, Calpe and Alicante, Altea in Costa Blanca is by contrast much more relaxed and picturesque, the narrow, cobbled streets of its old town winding down towards the promenade.

These narrow streets are lined with small shops selling local crafts and gifts, while mini-markets cater for your more day-to-day needs. A Sunday market is held weekly in La Nuncia, a short distance to the north of Altea, while Benidorm has a hypermarket and many more tourist-orientated shops.

Along Altea’s promenade you’ll find many bars, cafes and excellent restaurants. The town has a sizeable international community and a distinctly upmarket feel, reflected in the abundance of pavement cafes, smart shops and art galleries which lie along the promenade linking the town with the old port.

Altea lies in a beautiful bay, surrounded by rugged mountains, and this dramatic scenery has long been a magnet for artists, this reputation further reinforced by the recent opening of the University of Culture and Fine Arts, and a new concert hall.

Altea is a great base for package holidays and all inclusive holidays alike. If you visit by car, drive along the coast road to Calpe, stopping to admire the views across the bay and the skyscrapers of Benidorm in the distance.
