Agios Nikolaos holidays - Crete
The cretean St Tropez
For the perfect Agios Nikolaos holiday, come on board with The Co-operative Travel.
Agios Nikolaos, often dubbed the Cretean St Tropez, is the eastern tourist centre of Crete, retaining the picturesque character of the original town with all the facilities and activities of a typical Cretean holiday resort.
Agios Nikolaos manages to combine being arty, leisurely, a little sleepy, and yet also a bustling resort, built partly atop ancient remains of bygone residents' homes.
The sea encloses the town on three sides: The Lake and port, Kitroplatia beach and the Marina.
The Lake, or ‘Voulismeni’, is a deep body of water connected to the sea by a narrow inlet. It is surrounded and overlooked by cafes and restaurants - a busy gathering place for local residents and visitors alike.
The beach at Kitroplatia is one of the few in Crete to provide that town-centre-by-the-sea beach location, together with its own original restaurant and cafes, and a handful of hotels and apartments.
Agios Nikolaos’ shops offer a selection of original items, from woven fabrics, to cups, mugs and china wear and a miscellany of clothes, house decor and local food products and delicacies.
There are four beaches in the town itself, along with several more scattered along the coast on either side.
Agios Nikolaos is also home to an archaeological museum, the local flora exhibition “Iris” and numerous fairs.
