Johannesburg Holidays

GENERAL

A buzzing metropolis offering an array of delights

Delve into South Africa's past, and discover how it is shaping itself for a bright future on a Johannesburg holiday from The Co-operative Travel.

As the country's financial and cultural centre, the city is a buzzing metropolis offering an array of delights to visitors, ranging from the township of Soweto, and Nelson Mandela's former home, to the nearby hedonism and bright lights of Sun City, with its impressive, purpose-built hotels, casino's, restaurants and theatres. This area also houses the awesome Valley of the Waves theme park, with its five flume rides, and the chance to sample the ultimate white-knuckle water ride, a 17-metre drop down a steep slide with only a small pool at the bottom to cushion your momentum!

In the affluent northern suburbs of Sandton and Rosebank you'll also find glitzy shopping malls. The latter has an excellent African craft market, where stalls sell a wide variety of great souvenir items.

Both districts also boast a great deal of upmarket dining and entertainment, and as you tour these areas by night, you'll often hear the sound of live jazz music seeping through the air.

You should also try to find time to visit Johannesburg Zoo, unusual in that there are no cages or bars, and the animals are instead confined by moats - a great chance to get some wonderful photographs of rare and beautiful species!

A taste of the cosmopolitan in Johannesburg

A tour of Soweto will take in the modern township hospital and continue through all types of neighbourhood's ranging from shanty towns and workers' hostels to the modern home of Nelson Mandela, where he lived for the short time between his release from prison and his death. The tour also includes Mandela's earlier, more humble home where he lived when he was arrested.

For the full story of South Africa's apartheid era, visit the Apartheid Museum which offers an evocative and moving glimpse of the effects of white supremacy.

There are several working gold mines to visit near Johannesburg, which can be visited with prior written permission.

Eating out in the city encompasses all types of cuisine, but big, hearty South African steaks are a staple which you should sample at least once on your Johannesburg holiday. Elsewhere, Italian, Indian and Asian restaurants can also be found quite widely.

There is a huge choice of places to stay on your Johannesburg holiday, with all tastes and budgets readily catered for, and at The Co-operative Travel we offer you a selection of package holidays and all-inclusive holidays.
