Go skanking with the locals in Jamaica

People visiting the Caribbean island of Jamaica should try and mix more with the locals, it has been claimed.

Jamaica's new tourism minister Dr Wykeham McNeill believes that the true flavour of Jamaica can only be found if tourists go off the standard holidaying track and spend some time in the company of the island's inhabitants.

"It could be singing 'No woman no cry' with a local group, skanking after ska, eating ackee fish, jerk chicken or just relaxing with a rum cocktail," he told Travel Mole.

"I am certain that any of these adventures will improve our overall visitor satisfaction and encourage return visitors."

He added that the performance of the Jamaica athletes at this summer's Olympic Games in London is important for its tourist trade because they will deliver exposure for the island.

At the recent World Travel Awards ceremony in Qatar, Jamaica took the gong in the categories for best honeymoon destination and best cruise destination.
