Over-50s 'heading off on last minute package holidays'

A record number of travellers aged 50 or more have been booking last minute summer holidays this year because of the wide range of package deals on offer.

Research from Travelex showed that 55 per cent of the age group are planning to take flights to warmer overseas destinations this autumn, which is a 75 per cent increase on last year.

A third of people surveyed said the uninspiring British summer had encouraged them to book deals, while one in five cited the prevalence of great value all inclusive deals as a reason to take trips abroad.

Cheap holidays to Turkey are most popular among the over-50s, as almost 30 per cent said that's where they are headed this season.

Graham Edgar of Travelex commented: "Our new research hows just how money savvy our over-50s are.

"They are choosing last minute sun holidays in terms of where they can get great value by opting for countries and resorts that are offering last minute, money saving deals," he added.
