Tenerife wins sustainability award

The Tenerife Tourism Corporation has been handed the prestigious Green Award by the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).

Picking up the accolade at the Millennium Glocester Hotel in London, tourism minister Carlos Alonso said that recognition of their efforts underlined Tenerife’s commitment to sustainable travel.

Mr Alonso noted than an estimated 50 per cent of the island is made up by national parks and stated the important role the local government plays in ensuring that the land is protected.

"We have a number of amazing initiatives that we are working on that will reflect our recognition of the importance of sustainability for Tenerife.”

A recent addition to Tenerife’s green offerings to tourists is the Path of Senses train at the Anaga Rural Park, which allows visitors a free route through the middle of picturesque woodland.

Tenerife’s Siam Park water kingdom in Costa Adeje was recently voted as amongst British holidaymaker’s favourite places to visit whilst on a summer holiday according to Trip Advisor.
