North-west region of Spain 'is a well-guarded secret'

People planning to book cheap holidays may wish to consider taking a break in north-west Spain.

Speaking recently, Ignacio Vasallo, UK and Europe director of the Spanish Tourism Office, described the region as a "well-guarded secret" and suggested that it has a great deal to offer British tourists.

"The Cantabrian Mountains in Asturias lend themselves perfectly for hiking, caving and other outdoor pursuits. And for beach-lovers, its unspoilt coastline remains largely undiscovered," he commented.

According to Mr Vasallo, other popular places to visit in the north-west of Spain include Galicia, with its rugged fjords and Castille, which are steeped in history and home to numerous cultural attractions.

Research published earlier this year by travel review site Simon Seeks revealed that many people who took domestic holidays last year are planning to jet abroad in 2010.

Of those surveyed, 56 per cent said they intend to turn their backs on so-called staycations.
