Brits flock to Spain in record numbers

British holidaymakers flocked to Spain for their summer holidays during the first nine months of this year.

The Spanish national tourist board revealed that some 11 million Brits descended on its great nation during the period, up 9.2 per cent on figures posted during the same time in 2010.

The summer peak season between June and September saw more than 6.7 million Brits fly out to the holiday hotspot, up more than 500,000 from 2010.

September alone saw a sharp increase in visitor activity, up 11.4 per cent compared to the same month a year earlier.

Spain's many islands proved the most popular destinations for those UK residents seeking fun in the sun. The Balearics and the Canary Islands attracted 24.3 per cent and 23.7 per cent respectively.

Andalucia, which features the popular resorts of Seville, Malaga and Granada was the top choice for holidaymakers on the mainland.

Journalist and author Anna Nicholls said recently that Spain is a popular resort because it perfectly combines culture and cuisine.
