October 'is ideal time to visit Greece'
October is one of the best months for taking a
cheap holiday in Greece, according to travel expert Tom Hall.
Responding to a reader's query in the Guardian, the Lonely Planet writer says that September and October offer ideal conditions for visiting Greece because "the weather is warm but you avoid the crowds and heat of high summer".
For people flying into Thessaloniki in the north of the country, Mr Hall advises spending some time on the tranquil beaches of the Sithonian Peninsula or visiting the Athos Peninsula, which is known for its ancient monasteries.
Alternatively, he suggests that people planning
winter holidays around Thessaloniki could drive to Litochoro, a town situated at the base of Mount Olympus.
"Even if you're not keen on walking or climbing, it's a relaxing place for a few days and close to several ancient sites," Mr Hall explains.
Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece and boasts the country's largest higher education institution in the form of the Aristotle University.
