Greece 'is one of world's top tourist destinations'

With its sun-soaked beaches and crystal clear waters, it may come as little surprise that Greece is one of the world's most popular holiday destinations.

Sofia Panayiotaki, director of the UK and Ireland office at the Greek National Tourism Organisation, said the country is already one of the top four most visited places and is on track to become number one.

"It is a destination that many people can afford and that is one of the reasons why people continue to return to us," she explained.

Although the number of people travelling to Greece declined slightly this year, this is mainly down to the economic crisis being experienced across Europe, Ms Panayiotaki added.

In related news, flight search engine Skyscanner recently suggested that October is the ideal time to take holidays in Greece, as temperatures are still high, but summer crowds are beginning to dwindle.
