Holidays in Egypt 'proving popular'

It seems that staycations are a thing of the past, with an increasing number of Brits choosing to jet off to warmer climes.

ABTA - The Travel Association says bookings for the start of February were up by around 27 per cent, compared to the same period last year, the Guardian reports.

Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for the organisation, said things are "clearly improving" as far as cheap holidays to Spain and elsewhere are concerned.

Meanwhile, Egypt looks set to be the most popular destination for Brits in 2010.

Justin Francis, founder of ResponsibleTravel.com, said people want to get "experience for money" as well as value for money.

"Egypt offers a depth and range of iconic experiences at prices that countries in the eurozone struggle to match, given the weak pound," he told the newspaper.

Speaking recently, Lonely Planet editor Tom Hall said that despite being a relatively short flight away, Egypt is "radically different" to many other nearby destinations.
