Cruises from Southampton set to return to Egypt's top sites
Cruises from Southampton could soon be returning to one of Egypt's most historically-significant ports now that recent social and political unrest is winding down, it has been reported.
Over the past few months, the number of cruise passengers voyaging to North Africa have fallen significantly, with the city of Aswan particularly hard-hit.
However, according to Reuters, liners look set to return sooner rather than later as Egypt's main ports start opening to tourists again.
This means that passengers on cruises from Southampton and other UK ports could soon be sailing to see highlights such as the Valley of the Kings and the banks of the River Nile.
Indeed, the news agency notes that tourists are already returning to the country, lured by the prospect of
cheap holidays in the sun and also the knowledge that they are helping the Egyptian people to get back on their feet,
"I haven't felt unsafe at all. Everyone is very friendly and we are having a fantastic time," one holidaymaker was quoted as saying.
Situated to the west of the Nile, the Valley of the Kings is home to the tombs of dozens of ancient Egyptian rulers, including Tutankhamen.
