Over 50s are getting techy on holiday

Over 50s are getting increasingly tech savvy when they jet off on their summer holidays.

New research from Saga shows that 70 per cent take gadgets and gizmos with them on a break because it helps them to relax and unwind.

The days  of when enjoying a holiday read meant lugging around a bag full heavy books appears to be long gone as 20 per cent of older people are now the proud owners of a tablet device such as an iPad or Kindle.

Some 26 per cent said that like to listen to songs while away using their MP3 player and 24 per cent have a smart phone.

Roger Ramsden, chief executive of Saga Insurance, however, wanted that there could be a big pitfall to taking expensive gadgets on holiday.

He said: "People could become a target for thieves, so we would advise them to make sure they have adequate cover for their belongings before they travel."

A recent study by ABTA found that the older generation are the ones most likely to leave the country during this summer's Olympic Games in London.

Some 22 per cent of those aged over 65 and 18 per cent of 55 to 64-year-olds said that they are planning to jet off in the time to avoid the hype of the sporting event.
