Eurozone destinations 'becoming more affordable'

The cost of taking holidays in the eurozone has fallen over the last year, it has been revealed.

According to the latest Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer, prices in some destinations have dropped by as much as 42 per cent since summer 2009.

Portugal is the cheapest eurozone destination, with a basket containing items such as sun lotion, cigarettes, insect repellent and a three-course evening meal coming in at £38.61.

Italy was found to be the most expensive place to visit, with the same goods costing £76.10.

Commenting on the findings, Sarah Munro, head of travel money at the Post Office, said: "The biggest discounts have been on the cost of eating out, as eurozone restaurants battle for business with mouth-watering meal incentives."

According to the results of a recent Adfero street poll, around 80 per cent of people plan to spend the same on their holiday to Spain or elsewhere this year as they did in 2009.
