Save money 'by avoiding overseas charges'

People planning holidays to Turkey and other popular destinations this summer have been advised that they can save money by avoiding overseas card charges.

According to Moneyfacts.co.uk, a little bit of research can help travellers to make significant savings.

Melanie Slade, a spokesperson for the website, said that although changing money at the airport and using your debit card when abroad can seem convenient, it may not be the most cost-effective option.

"Shopping around before you go will leave you more in control of getting the best rate. Commission free doesn't necessarily mean the best deal. The commission fee is likely to have been loaded into the rate," she explained.

Ms Slade warned Brits taking holidays to Turkey and elsewhere that cards often levy foreign usage charges, as well as transaction fees.

Speaking recently, Kevin Mountford, head of banking at moneysupermarket.com, said prepaid currency cards can be a good option for travellers who do not want to carry large amounts of cash.
