New Zealand voted top long-haul destination

New Zealand has been voted as the world's best long-haul destination by the readers of the Guardian and Observer newspapers.

The award comes just one month after Conde Nast Trveller magazine readers named it as one of the top five places to visit.

Andy Pietrasik, travel editor of the Guardian, said the award proves that New Zealand is still appealing for Brits, despite the economic downturn.

"This will stand it in very good stead as the travel environment improves," he added.

Tourism New Zealand chief executive George Hickton said it is important that the country continues to be recognised as a great destination by travellers.

Meanwhile, those hoping to soak up some sun this winter without flying to the other side of the world could consider a break in Dubai.

Dan Linstead, editor of travel publication Wanderlust, described it as a destination that offers luxury and great value for money.
