Holidaymakers 'bucking staycation trend'

It seems that staycations are a thing of the past, with millions of people planning to book cheap holidays to Spain and elsewhere this year.

Research carried out by Lloyds TSB revealed that approximately 35.6 million Britons intend to jet off to warmer climes in the near future.

A third of respondents said the recent cold snap was behind their decision to take a foreign break.

Around 60 per cent of people plan to enjoy a holiday in Europe, while 12 per cent will be heading to the US.

Of those polled, 30 per cent claimed they have already arranged their main 2010 trip.

However, 60 per cent admitted they have not yet purchased travel insurance.

Commenting on the findings, Andrew Piggott, a spokesman for Lloyds TSB, said: "With more people travelling abroad this year, holidaymakers really need to make sure they have appropriate travel cover to stop their holiday heaven from turning into a nightmare."

Speaking recently, Jonathan Cudworth, director of product management for Expedia, said there are more great travel deals around than ever.
