Dominican Republic 'unaffected by Haiti earthquake'

People planning to jet off on all-inclusive holidays to the Dominican Republic have been advised that the country has not been affected by the recent earthquake in neighbouring Haiti.

According to the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, all transport systems, medical facilities, attractions and communication networks are operating as normal.

The country's tourism chief Francisco Javier Garcia commented: "We are grateful and with deep concern open our hearts to our neighbours and will continue to do everything we can to help them and reassure global travellers that the Dominican Republic is receiving visitors."

Dominican Republic's main tourist hub Punta Cana is located approximately 400 miles away from the capital of Haiti, where the devastating earthquake struck earlier this week.

Leonel Fernandez, the country's president, has joined other world leaders in calling for immediate humanitarian assistance for Haiti.

In related news, singer Wyclef Jean announced via his Twitter page that he has made his way to Haiti via the Dominican Republic and is currently helping with the relief effort there.
