Dominican Republic Tourist Board recommends "amazing" whale sanctuary

Tourists who visit the Dominican Republic will be able to enjoy "picture perfect" beaches and take part in plenty of water sports, according to Gustavo Candelario, assistant director at the Dominican Republic Tourist Board.

Mr Candelario explained that visitors to the island could enjoy white water rafting and kite surfing, and visit the whale sanctuary.

He said: "Every winter we get about 4,000 humpback whales visiting the Dominican Republic from January until March and we have the first whale sanctuary in the world, so it is truly amazing."

In addition, he said that the island is "good value for money", particularly when compared to other Caribbean destinations, and he suggested that it offers cash-strapped holidaymakers a "fantastic deal".

Those who want to experience the "real Caribbean" are advised by Mr Candelario to visit the island's rum distilleries and cigar factories.

Some 25 per cent of the Dominican Republic's green land and coastal areas are protected as national parks, reserves and sanctuaries.ADNFCR-2580-ID-800352786-ADNFCR
