Brits 'waste £28m changing money at airport'

Changing money is often the last thing people think of when they are taking holidays to Greece and other popular destinations.

However, travellers looking to save money this summer have been advised to avoid buying foreign currency at the airport.

Research by the Post Office revealed that British holidaymakers waste around £28 million every year by changing their cash in the departure lounge.

Sarah Munro, head of travel money at the organisation, explained: "We compared rates at five UK airports with those available in Post Office bureaux de change branches and found that tourists buying at the airport would get far fewer euros for their pounds."

The study found that a family changing £286 into euros at the airport loses an average of £16.

Speaking recently, Bob Atkinson, a travel expert from travelsupermarket.com, said holidaymakers hoping to get more bang for their buck this year should consider travelling to a eurozone destination such as Greece.
