Brits urged to apply for EHICs

Britons preparing to jet off on holidays to Spain and other popular destinations over the coming weeks have been urged to apply for a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK.

In a statement earlier this week, the European Commission noted that the cards make it easier for people to receive medical treatment if they fall ill when abroad.

"The card ensures that citizens will get the same access to public sector healthcare (e.g. a doctor, a pharmacy or a hospital) as nationals of the country they are visiting," the body noted.

Holidaymakers are advised to apply for cards at least four weeks prior to their departure date.

Travellers have also been urged to take out a regular travel insurance policy, as EHICs do not cover cancellations, delays and lost luggage.

A recent study carried out by Scottish Widows revealed that 39 per cent of Scots who are expecting to travel overseas this summer have yet to buy protection.
