Travelling towards a sustainable future

As part of the wider Co-operative Group, we have a history of corporate responsibility and the Group’s leading edge sustainability initiatives were recognised with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development.

One year on since launching our own ethical strategy, we’ve already made significant progress and have developed new initiatives that we believe set us apart in the travel industry.

• We are a key supporter of two new ground breaking industry projects, Overland Heaven and Tourism 2023.

- The Overland Heaven initiative is to make low carbon overland travel between the UK and Europe more accessible.

- Tourism 2023 aims to help the UK Outbound Tourist Industry, and some of its key destinations, to prepare for the impacts of climate change, waste security, a growing and ageing global population, an increase in the cost of resources and political instability.

• We are currently piloting a unique education programme, The Greener Travel Award, which teaches children about responsible tourism and provides an insight into how a travel agent operates.

Working towards sustainable standards

As a responsible tour operator, we’re committed to and support Travelife. Travelife is a sustainable standard backed by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) and the European Union.
We continue to work hard with our hoteliers and some of them have already achieved a good standard so look out for the relevant gold, silver or bronze Travelife logos that we’ve included on relevant property pages. You can also track our progress by searching for your hotel at www.travelife.eu.

Investing in sustainable tourism initiatives worldwide

This UK charity supports communities in holiday destinations worldwide by investing in sustainable tourism initiatives.

The Co-operative Travel, like many other leading operators, supports The Travel Foundation but we’re taking our support one step further. For every passenger booked on one of our holidays, we’ll donate £1 to The Travel Foundation, in addition to the donations collected from you, our customers.

Working to offset carbon emissions in the developing world

The Co-operative Group works with Climate Care, an organisation dedicated to combating climate change to provide our customers with an easy way to ensure that they counteract the impact their flight has on the environment. When you book with us, you’ll have the option to make a small payment to help fund carbon offset projects in the developing world.

Carbon offset projects funded by The Co-operative Group include:

• The replanting of over 230 hectares of rainforest in Uganda.
• An irrigation project in India.
• The provision of energy efficient cooking stoves in Cambodia.
